Orange Sale

Orange-sale

In March, Terre des hommes (Tdh) organised for the 50th time its traditional sale of oranges, when more than 1,500 volunteers ensured the smooth operation of the largest Swiss street sale for a humanitarian benefit. After 320,000 oranges sold in 2011, in 2012 we reached very nearly 400,000!

Sale of oranges 2012: an excellent year!

“The 50th traditional sale of oranges was widely crowned with success, all thanks to the joint efforts of the volunteer groups and head office during the past 6 months of preparation and during the sale itself. This 50th sale of oranges was marked by the arrival of new volunteers, an increased number of stands in the streets, greater participation by firms, as well as by significant media presence. It is thanks to you, our volunteer workers, thanks to your efforts and all the energy you put into your support for Terre des hommes that such an impression could be made. You were able, once again, to give positive visibility to our Foundation and also had a direct impact on the funds raised. For all these reasons we should like to offer you all our most sincere gratitude.” – Sandra Wirth, Communication & Fundraising Director.

The sale of oranges and its impact

The orange, a fruit full of sunshine and a synonym for health, is the vitamin-full symbol chosen by Tdh for the past 50 years! In the street sales, passers-by give a minimum of CHF 2.- in exchange for an orange, the first step towards a child’s healing.

These commitments are the measure of Tdh’s impact. 700,000 children and mothers benefit from health projects run in sixteen countries:

The results are tangible and at all levels:

  • With CHF 6.- we can fill two tanks with drinking water in the Occupied Palestinian Territories
  • With CHF 10.- we can give five medical consultations in Senegal
  • With CHF 20.- we can save the life of a child suffering from acute malnutrition who needs about two weeks in hospital in Guinea

Origin of the oranges

Our oranges, supplied by COOP, are produced in the Valencia region of Spain by Frupale, according to strict standards of respect for the environment and guaranteeing a responsible approach to the health and safety of the workpeople.

Firms with solidarity

Companies showing increased interest in our work offered oranges to their employees or customers. In 2012, more than 1000 firms bought boxes of oranges.

Share oranges with your friends!

Now the 2012 sale of oranges is over. Nonetheless, so as to continue to support Tdh’s health projects. Help us to accelerate our impact in sharing virtual oranges with your friends and acquaintances. Every single orange is sponsored by our 2012-partner.

The money collected in this way goes to undernourished children, expectant mothers, children with heart problems, and to promote access to decent drinking water. Please have a look at our teaser.
